Résumé optimisation

Roughly three quarters of applications are filtered by software before a human sees them. A strong candidate with a badly formatted résumé loses to a weaker one that parsed cleanly.

  1. 1One column only. Two-column layouts, text inside images and text inside tables are frequently unreadable to parsing software.
  2. 2Standard section headings — Experience, Education, Skills. Creative headings get skipped entirely.
  3. 3Mirror the exact terminology the job advert uses, for skills you genuinely have. "JavaScript" and "JS" are not always matched as the same term.
  4. 4One measurable number per role where you have one: scale, volume, budget, or a percentage improvement.
  5. 5Put your Academy certificate verification ID on it — an employer can confirm it in seconds, which almost nothing else on a résumé allows.
  6. 6Save as PDF unless the advert asks otherwise, named FirstName-LastName-Role.pdf.
